What is the application process?

Jane has a five-part application process.

  1. Register - for Entry ID and Password online.
  2. Apply - complete application online
  3. Pay the $50 Application Fee. 
  4. Offer - the College makes you an offer via email for accommodation at Jane
  5. Accept - To accept and confirm your place at college you must pay the Acceptance Fee.

When can I apply?

Applications for 2019 are open now. If you are re-applying for 2019 and have forgotten your Password please contact us. We still have places available for Semester 2, 2018.

Student rooms vary in size from compact to very large. Some rooms have en-suites for an additional charge, however, most residents share bathroom facilities. The College has a limited number of long beds for taller residents. You are welcome to tour the College and view a room at any time. Please contact us to arrange. 


What's included in my fees?

Fees cover provision of a study bedroom, single bed, mattress protector, furniture, full board with 21 meals per week, electricity, water, gas, heating, Academic Development Program, WiFi (up to 70 GB per month), 24-hour support from residential and non-residential staff, the provision of a bus service to and from Hobart campuses and 24 hour access to laundry washing machines and dryers.


What's not included in my fees?

Fees do not cover cleaning of your room, university fees, parking, books, stationery, printing, photocopying, telephone call charges, linen and bedding, soap powder and academic gown. Rooms with an en-suite and some very large rooms attract an additional charge. Additional WiFi data (above 70 GB) may be purchased from the office.

When do I pay my fees

All fees are paid in advance unless direct debit arrangements have been made with the College. Further information about payment can be found here


What about internet?

The College has WiFi in all internal spaces. The College provides all residents an allocation of 75 GB per month included in the cost of fees. The College also has two University of Tasmania hotspots, and four computer terminals which are free to use. 


Jane seems expensive

At Jane we offer the complete package. Our all inclusive fees offer furnished facilities, meals, bills, WiFi, pastoral care and on-call staff, buses, a tailored academic program and so much more. When considering other accommodation options and adding up all the hidden costs of living in a flat -including those huge winter power bills - Jane seems like a very reasonable option. Consider, too, the intangibles that no-one can put a price on: lifelong friendships and community support.

What’s on the Jane menu?

The food at Jane is first rate - so our students tell us. With a good variety of western and Asian style dishes at evening meals plus regular omelette and pancake breakfasts the meals at Jane offer something for everyone. We provide a variety of special meals including gluten-free and vegetarian. Halal options are also available. See a typical menu here


Is there an option for single gender accommodation?

Yes. However requests should be made to the Registrar upon application. Limited en-suite rooms are also available at additional cost. 


Are share rooms available?

The vast majority of our rooms are single occupancy rooms. Some twin share and couples rooms can be made available upon request to the College Registrar. Students need to already have a roommate they would like to share with. As twin share and couples rooms are limited, students are advised to make contact as early as possible. 


does jane offer self-catering?

Jane is first and foremost a community. Communal dining is central to bringing all residents together in much the same way that a family may gather at the dining table each evening for dinner.

Self-catering is not available to first year residents. 

Self-catering is available to a limited number of selected returning students who have a record of good citizenship in the College. Students who self-cater must be resident of either the Lodge or Michael Webber House. Students in the Lodge or Michael Webber House are still expected to attend formal dinners as part of their contracts at Jane. They may also choose to purchase a meal package for the whole year or meal vouchers in the College Dining Hall.  


Are any discounts available?

The College gives discounts to siblings, to third year students and to the children of Jane alumni. Jane also offers a comprehensive range of scholarships with applications closing in October each year. More about Jane scholarships can be found here


What is the best way to get to university and Hobart?

With the Jane bus! The bus operates throughout the semester so download the timetable here. Jane is also a short 20 minute walk from the city centre and from the Sandy Bay Campus of UTAS. Metro buses can be taken on Davey Street.
